Rethinking Depression

Limitations of the Traditional Model

The traditional model of depression, deeply ingrained in clinical practice and public consciousness, often fails to address the complexity and heterogeneity of the disorder. As the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5 outlines, depression is diagnosed based on a specific set of symptoms. However, this approach overlooks the unique experiences of individuals. Research in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology (Fried, E.I., et al., 2017) suggests that depressive symptoms are interconnected in complex ways that the traditional model does not account for.

The Vital Role of Open Dialogue in Mental Health: A Journey Together

Imagine a dinner table where conversations about emotions, fears, and anxieties are as normal as discussing the day's events. This is not a far-fetched reality but a necessary evolution in our approach to mental health. By fostering such an environment, parents can instill resilience and understanding in their children, equipping them to face life's challenges with a healthier mental framework.

Understanding #Stigma in Mental Health

Stigma in mental health is a multi-headed hydra. It manifests as public stigma, self-stigma, and institutional stigma, each with its own detrimental effects. Public stigma involves societal stereotypes and prejudices, self-stigma refers to internalized negative perceptions, and institutional stigma arises from policies and practices that limit opportunities for those with mental health issues. This complex web often deters individuals from seeking the help they desperately need.

Revolutionizing Recovery: How AI Enhances Addiction Treatment in 2023

The frequent recurrence of substance use (relapse) and patient dropout from treatment programs have been longstanding challenges in the management of substance use disorders. However, the emergence of AI offers a transformative approach to address these problems. By leveraging the power of advanced algorithms and machine learning, AI can provide unprecedented insights, early detection, personalized treatment plans, and continuous monitoring, revolutionizing the way we manage SUD. With the integration of AI into clinical practice and research, we have the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes, reduce relapse rates, and enhance the overall efficacy of treatment programs. In healthcare, AI technologies like Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are gaining traction. ML algorithms, for instance, can enhance the safety of medications and speed up drug discovery. They are used to evaluate vast volumes of data against complex, multifactorial, and continuously changing criteria to eliminate diagnostic and treatment mistakes. In addiction treatment, this might include predicting side effects, drug interactions, and developing new, safer drugs with fewer side effects. Moreover, AI can improve medication for conditions co-occurring with addiction, like depression and anxiety, influencing the outcome and prediction of addiction treatment.

AI in Mental Health: Revolutionizing Mood Disorder Care

Before delving into AI's role in understanding mood disorders, it's crucial to appreciate the complexity of these conditions. Mood disorders are not one-size-fits-all; they encompass a spectrum of disorders that affect a person's emotional state, often resulting in significant impairments in daily life. Let's briefly look at some of the most common mood disorders:

A complex landscape of mental health conditions exists, with depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders comprising significant categories. Depression, encompassing Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD), and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), manifests as persistent sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure. PDD represents long-term, chronic symptoms spanning years, while SAD relates to a seasonal pattern, primarily occurring during fall and winter months due to reduced sunlight exposure.

Just Keep Swimming

The idea of leading an average life post-depression recovery is some good roller-coaster ride I am currently into. Though the inner demons make sure they crawl whenever they want to. Inner demons like overthinking, endless thoughts (some good, some bad, some are a mix of both), anxiety, sleepless nights(sometimes), getting too overwhelmed, feeling low, etc. They are on my to-do list, gradually overcoming them and just cherishing each day because, in Winnie the Pooh, Pooh asks, “What day is it?” “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. “My favourite day,” said Pooh.” This, my friend, is the best approach to life, which is what keeps me going.

What are we learning?

What are we learning?

People say not to compare your personal struggles to anyone else. Symptoms, conditions, causes and treatments are not at all alike. The road travelled is vastly different for everyone so it's impossible to make comparisons and get the situation right every time.

Multiple times I have been told by those closest to me that “You can’t be bipolar”. And I’m like WTF. Really, how can they know? And it's that constant self doubt that creates incredible misery. Manly because these are the people in your life that you have come accustomed to being there and supporting you. So, because I do my damndest to control my outbursts or maybe it’s because I am high functioning? It creates terrifying confusion.

Mental Illness - A Global Force

Mental Illness - A Global Force

Mental Illness doesn’t discriminate. It takes no hostages, takes no prisoners, and takes nearly everything you love from you. It doesn’t care if you’re rich, or poor, a Dr., or Lawyer, a police officer, brick layer, Dentist, or mechanic. Mental Illness will deliberately fool you into believing it’s lies. Mental Illness doesn’t care if you’re Canadian, American, African, or East Indian.

What does Mental Illness care about?…

The Pitfalls of Social Media and Mental Illness.

You see being sexually abused as a child I had never learned boundaries. I simply didn’t know what that meant. That mentality followed me into adulthood where attachment issues played a huge role. Wanting to connect and not wanting to connect with people in the real world is difficult to do for me.

The Mental Illness Double Standard

The Mental Illness Double Standard

I have since been officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I still have a hard time missing classes, calling into work shifts or even canceling plans with friends because I feel an overwhelming guilt and a lot of shame for letting others down. It’s an unintended consequence. Almost like another symptom of Mental Illness. Another layer to navigate. This is what many others can’t understand. The indirect symptoms of nearly all mental illnesses. That is the shame, guilt, fear of letting others down. It’s ironic actually. If you broke your leg, or know someone that has, how many times did you or they apologize for not being able to do the same things as before? Well, in my lifetime I’ve never heard of one being in an accident apologizing for “being in an accident”. Nor have I ever heard someone apologize for getting the flu or catching a cold. Why do I need to apologize for my illness? Why the double standard? Why the ignorance? Why personal defeatism?

The Mask

If it seems I’m distant, maybe I am. It might not be intentional, although at times it is. Sometimes I need to get out and talk, to give voice to the darkness swirling around me… but I’m too afraid to ask for your time. I understand all too well that you have a life, a job, a family, commitments. And those are important, no question. But they’re more important than me. I feel like I talk about this garbage over and over and over and it gets boring to you. That it’s exhausting for you to see and hear me walk this path over and over and over with scarcely a sign of progress.

One Last Time…

*************************TRIGGER WARNING*********************

I committed suicide, yes. That’s not quite what I mean, though. Did I really kill me? Was it really my own willful and conscious choice? Was I in complete and full control of all my faculties? Did the chemicals in my brain and battered emotions finally conspire in rebellion against the rest of me? And if that’s the case, aside from my brain and emotions, what else makes me really “me” and not someone else? Or is the rest of me still “me” too? It matters not at this point, because one part of me murdered the rest of me. A mutiny of sorts, I suppose. The victor scuttled the ship, but in doing so burned the only remaining lifeline. In the once-heated battle, I was simultaneously the victim and the villain.

The choices we make!

The choices we make!

Hey folks, I hope you are doing just fine, physically, mentally and emotionally. I hope you are taking care of yourself and your loved ones and making sure that you are there for them. In this rat race called life, we often forget that our health plays an utmost important role. We often get too worked up or overworked that there comes a time when you literally could feel your health getting deteriorated, and the day comes when you finally decide to care for yourself. Why wait for something significant to happen, and then only we will act on it? Why not assure that we will take care of our health and our work and other commitments.

Brain Fog - Is It Real?

I have recently been bothered by never being able to make decisions in a timely manner. Now let me be clear. These aren't tough life decisions. This is small little almost stupid choices. For example, Buying on or off brand pain reliever? The price is different but is it as effective? Or when I’m looking to buy an outfit. I can make the easy decisions but my mind often becomes filled with an S.O.S. Am I making the correct choice? Am I going to be comfortable? Will my friends like this?

The Drugs

Medications have been one large guessing game for me over the years. I have had a couple “okay” experiences and one horror story that looking back makes me question things. If i were to guess this was medication #12 after being off of daily medications for close to two years (I have tried my hardest to avoid medications, I find they either make you feel too much of one emotion or feel absolutely nothing… being a zombie isn't really my preference but that is not the point of this story).
